The Top Reasons to Love Linen

Why we love linen, and why you will too!

There are many fabrics for fashion and home these days, and among them is linen. Not often the first material to come to mind, linen is coming into its own, in a big way for so many reasons.

Here's our favourite characteristics of linen and why we have fallen in love with this fabric.

Durable

Linen is known as the world's strongest natural fibre, thus making linen products very long-lasting. It won't lose its shape after washing, but rather will become softer and get better with age. With proper care, linen products will last for years to come. Maybe you will even get to pass them on to someone else one day.

Both our garment and home linen fabrics have a weight of 240gsm, making them durable for every day use.

Easy Care

Linen fabric can be machine washed in cold or warm water and then tumbled dry on low or hung to dry naturally. (Tumble drying helps soften the linen.) Linen fabric has a reputation of having to be ironed to look good, and this couldn't be any less true. High-quality linen is wrinkly and part of its natural beauty and charm. Wrinkly cotton or silk will look messy, whereas linen fabric will shine in all of its glory! If you still prefer a pressed look, use a medium-heat iron or a garment steamer. Hanging you linen item in a steamy bathroom can also help remove wrinkles. Our Linen Spray is a great way to freshen up and soften wrinkles on natural fibres garments and bed linens — it's especially handy for traveling.

Hypoallergenic

Linen is very breathable, allowing air to move around freely and thus releases moisture very fast. This makes the fabric very resilient to bacteria and microbe growth. Also making it an excellent choice for anyone experiencing some type of discomfort - such as night sweats.

Year-Round Wear

Linen is widely known as a fabric to help keep you cool; its lightweight, breathable and moisture wicking, making it an obvious summer choice. Did you know that this same cooling fabric can also keep you warm in the chillier months? Linen will retain the heat from your body and releases the excess which helps keep you cozy and comfortable.

When designing our garments we keep layering in mind. We don't want your favourite garments to be restricted to a certain season of wear. We believe in transitional dressing that involves both layering underneath and over top of your staple linen pieces. (Check out our Layering Knits collection.)

Versatile

Linen fabric has an innate ability to compliment every occasion, whether that be for dressing up or for a more low-key look. We pride ourselves when designing with intention and versatility in mind. Go ahead and have fun styling your linen looks with jewelry, sweaters, shoes, etc. There are no rules!

Sustainable

Flax plant cultivation is by far more sustainable that that of cotton, making linen a smart choice right off the get-go. Linen fabric is also recyclable and biodegradable, meaning you won't be adding to the insurmountable pile of textile waste. Here at Cedar & Vine, our entire production happens under one roof so we are able to be more conscious and transparent with our manufacturing methods. We do our very best to keep our textile waste to a minimum through lean production practices and by using scraps for swatch kits and larger offcuts for small products.

Comfort

With linen being lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking, and thermoregulating we can all agree that linen is at the top of its game when it comes to comfort.

There is also no better feeling of comfort than a garment that fits you perfectly! We are strong believers that everyone deserves a garment that helps them feel great and we are thrilled to offer an inclusive size range, but we also understand that every single human is a unique size. Sometimes there are other considerations to take into account; lengthening/shortening hems, adjusting torso length, increasing/decreasing pant rise - just to name a few. Our no waste production method allows us to offer specific size tailoring on orders, just include any special sizing requests in the notes section of your order.

Our obsession with linen is no coincidence. In our current use-and-discard society, we are returning to the simplicity of designing and creating investment pieces that are going to last. Although we may be biased, we believe there is no better material to start with when designing a quality piece.

Whether you love linen to wear or in the home, it’s a gorgeous fabric that will last and give you years of wear and comfort!
